Mullein: Lung Love
Our Herbal Allies
“The first peace, which is the most important, is that which comes within the souls of people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the Universe and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the Universe dwells the Great Spirit, and that this center is really everywhere, it is within each of us.”— Black Elk, The Sacred Pipe
A main tenet of Shamanism is that the soul of the world is “animated” – that a conscious presence (whether it speaks a known or unknown language) exists in every rock, stream, bird, cloud and, of course – precious plant.
Everything is alive; everything is filled with dynamic life-force energy, and is connected to everything else by an interconnected “Web of Life.” This web itself is alive, spirited, animated, intelligent, accessible, mysterious and compassionately divine.
Herbs – the precious plants (from roots to stems to leaves to flowers) – are our most sincere, true, and enduring power-filled allies. These plants have walked the walk with humans since time before time. Herbs have been, and still are, our food, our companions, our teachers, and our healers. They have, and still do, provide enhanced nourishment, energy and life-force vitality.
An herb, as a whole (not the pieces and parts that pharmaceuticals pick and choose and separate) is the wisdom of the ages; it is their synergy (all pieces and parts as one) that provides their power to ease pain, staunch bleeding, reduce stress, close wounds, strengthen muscle and bone, cleanse blood and strengthen hearts, remove mucous from nose and lungs, repel infection (viral and bacterial) and on and on and on … .
We have been long (far too long) separated from the vital web of green life that was once our greatest ally; as close to our birth, life, journey and death as the air we breathe. As a species, we (from every part of this Earth) have relied on herbs from first breath to last breath.
We are more than two-leggeds walking upon the Earth; we are the Earth. We are inherently – and without doubt – grown, raised, watered, nourished and fed by Earth. And when we reach out and reconnect with the soul of our roots (or the roots of our soul) in herbs, then the heart and soul of our herbal allies, once again, reconnect to us – and honor the time-before-time agreement we have to love, serve, help and heal each other as One.
